Losing weight with friends: why it’s easier together and how to start 🤝

⚡ In short: Losing weight together is easier for many people because a group creates accountability: you don’t want to let the others down, and a little competition turns a chore into a game. It works best with clear rules, a fair ranking in percent and a way of logging that takes seconds.

👥 Why a group helps

When you lose weight alone, nobody notices if you skip a day. In a group, everyone can see who is in and who is missing. That creates accountability without anyone having to nag.

🛠️ Three ways to organise it

List or spreadsheet

📊 One person keeps the numbers. Simple, but it quickly lands on one person’s shoulders.

Chat group

💬 Everyone posts their weight. Quick, but the numbers get buried between other messages.

App

🥊 Everyone logs their own weight and the leaderboard calculates itself. The full comparison is here: spreadsheet, WhatsApp or app?

⚖️ Start fair

To keep it fun, everyone needs the same chance. Whoever starts heavier usually loses kilos faster – so a fair challenge ranks the change in percent. If you’d rather not show your weight, keep it private: the others then only see your change. And everything is voluntary – nobody gets put on the spot.

📝 What every group needs

Agree on duration, weigh-in rhythm and scoring up front. A ready-made template is here: weight loss challenge rules.

🤔 When you don’t need a group – and the limits

If you organise yourself well anyway, you don’t need a group. A challenge also doesn’t replace medical guidance: with existing health conditions, pregnancy, eating disorders or any doubt, please ask your doctor first. Weight fluctuates from day to day, and slow, steady change is generally considered more sustainable than crash diets. If the comparison starts to feel like pressure, stepping out is perfectly fine.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why is losing weight together often easier?

A group creates accountability: you don’t want to let the others down, you can share progress and you get support on bad days. A small, friendly competition also turns daily consistency into a game.

How many people do you need for a weight loss challenge?

Two is enough. On FatFight a duel for two is free, and groups go up to 6 fighters. If you have nobody to challenge, you can fight alone against Puu, the computer opponent.

How do you keep the comparison fair?

Ranking in percent is fairest because it accounts for each person’s starting weight. On top of that, everyone can keep their weight private so the others only see the change.

What if someone loses interest?

They can step out – a challenge is voluntary and should be fun. On FatFight, anyone who logs nothing for three days is K.O. After the fight ends there is a rematch if you want one.
